Christmas Markets in Ireland 2026 — The Best Options
The Christmas market scene in Ireland has grown significantly over the past decade. Where once you'd struggle to find anything beyond a few stalls outside a shopping centre, most Irish cities now have proper, atmospheric markets running from mid-November through to Christmas Eve. Some are genuinely worth making a trip for.
Here's an honest guide to what's worth your time and what to expect from each major market.
Belfast Christmas Market — City Hall
The standout Irish Christmas market, and one of the best in the UK and Ireland. Belfast Christmas Market takes place in the grounds of City Hall in the city centre — a stunning setting with the illuminated building as a backdrop. It typically runs from mid-November to Christmas Eve and features over 100 stalls with a strong European market influence — German sausages, mulled wine, Belgian waffles, artisan crafts, and gifts from sellers across Europe and Ireland.
Entry is free. It gets extremely busy at weekends, particularly in December — going midweek or in the evening is a much better experience. The surrounding Cathedral Quarter pubs are worth exploring before or after.
Dublin Christmas Markets
Dublin has several Christmas markets scattered across the city, the most established being the market at Smithfield Square and the Christkindlmarkt-style market that typically sets up in the city centre. Quality and scale vary year to year — Dublin's markets have improved significantly but don't yet match Belfast for atmosphere or consistency.
Flea markets and artisan Christmas markets in venues like the RDS and various indoor locations are often better for gift shopping than the outdoor stalls. The Christmas atmosphere around Grafton Street, the Powerscourt Townhouse, and the Docklands area is worth experiencing even outside of formal market events.
Galway Christmas Market
Galway's Christmas market in Eyre Square is one of Ireland's most atmospheric — the combination of the compact city centre, the market stalls, and Galway's general character make it worth visiting. The market typically runs from late November through to early January. Galway is worth visiting at Christmas for the city itself as much as the market.
Cork Christmas Markets
Cork has developed a stronger Christmas market scene in recent years, with events in the city centre and at venues like the English Market — itself worth visiting at any time of year, but particularly atmospheric at Christmas. The English Market's Christmas offering of local food producers and artisan goods is genuinely excellent and one of the better Irish Christmas shopping experiences.
Tips for Irish Christmas Markets
- Go midweek — weekend markets in December are extremely crowded, particularly in Belfast and Dublin. Evenings midweek are the sweet spot.
- Bring cash as a backup — most stalls take cards now but some smaller sellers are still cash only.
- Layer up — outdoor Irish markets in November and December are cold. Dress for it.
- Book accommodation early — December weekends in Irish cities get busy. If you're travelling for a market, don't leave accommodation to the last minute.
- Check opening dates — markets open and close at different times, and dates shift year to year. Always check the official website before travelling.
